24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
What does success look like in America?
-Owning a home
-Children excelling in sports, music, plays, etc.
-Having a family income of over $100k
-Being involved in your church, home associations, coaching/mentoring, etc.
-Having a good following on social media
-Able to give to charities from your wealth
-Having multiple trucks, cars, ATVs, etc.
If you have accomplished the above goals, then congratulations, you are a successful American. However, consider who you are serving? Don’t get me wrong, none of those items above are sin. In fact, those are admiral goals. I just can’t help but wonder what God would consider successful.
-Loving the Lord God with all your heart
-Loving your neighbor
-Kind, patient, gentle, joyful, loving, peaceful, good, faithful, demonstrating self-control
-Treating others as you would want to be treated
-Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ
-Obedience to God’s Word
-Praying for the needs of others, for people to be saved
-Reading the Word of God, the Bible
God's idea of what makes a person successful in life is much different than what mankind thinks. Again, it is not that there is anything wrong with mankind's goals. It is when your focus takes precedence over what God really wants in your life. For example, are you neglecting time in God’s word so that you can work late to earn that extra buck? Are you not giving sacrificially so that you can afford that new boat? It is better to live for Jesus and be content with what God provides than to neglect your spiritual walk.
